Prospects for a settlement in the St. Louis school desegregation case faded today (Wednesday) when state officials proclaimed failure in negotiations in the Kansas City desegregation case.

Pressure for a negotiated settlement had grown after the U.S. Supreme Court sided with the state in its arguments against paying a part of the Kansas City desegregation costs.

With that decision, the state had hoped it could reach an out-of-court settlement to end the Kansas City case.

The governor's chief staff, Marc Farinella, says they don't know how failure in Kansas City will affect the St. Louis case:

Contents: [162K WAV file - Farinella says state government has tried to get a feel for the possibility of negotiations with St. Louis.]

Farinella says there are no current negotiations on St. Louis case. And, Farinella says, he's not sure there will be.
