Missouri's Highway Department has asked the state for the power to sell bonds to raise money for construction. But Candyce Clifft reports from Jefferson City the idea is running into opposition:

Although the highway department promises there would be no tax increases to fund those bonds, some legislators are skeptical.

The highway department plans to ask for a 500 million dollar bond issue to complete their highway construction plan -- costing another 250-million dollars in interest.

St. Louis County Representative Joan Bray chairs the committee that's looking over the department's proposal:

Bray says it's not a foregone conclusion that the legislature will apprpove the bond issue.

Over in the Senate, questions have been raised about the deepartment's idea that the bond issue NOT be submitted to the voters.
