Missouri Government News for Week of November 20

• GOP Chair Under Attack

For the second time in a month, State GOP Chairman Woody Cozad came under attack for handling of personal financial interests.

This time, Democrats accused Cozad of being more than six months late in filing a financial disclosure report required because he is an MU curator.

Cozad conceded he was late. He said he simply forgot.

Just a couple of days state officials learned their federal colleagues will be returning to work, they went home for their own break. But the state's shutdown was normal -- it was the Thanksgiving break.

State government will be closed both Thursday and Friday. Traditionally, the Thanksgiving break has provided a lull before frantic activity begins in preparation for the legislative session.

Already, the House appropriations committees have scheduled a full round of budget hearings to start immediately the following week.

The Democratic nominee for House speaker announced he would launch an investigation into spending on travel by House members.

Sam Leake's announcement came in response to published reports of excessive travel costs racked up by House Majority Leader Bob Ward.

Leake says that if he is elected speaker, he will form a bipartisan committee to examine expenditures made by elected officials.
