Health care providers must provide minimum hospital stays for new mothers in a bill that cleared the Senate. The Senate overwhelmingly passed a substitute bill allowing 48 hour hospital stays for new mothers, even if their insurance has run out. This proposal prevents insurers from forcing a mother to leave a hospital before they are ready. St. Louis County Senator David Klarich says guaranteed stays are foolish.

Contents: Klarich says the bill provides a minimum stay even it is not necessary.

Senator Klarich also says the bill neglects those women who do not have access to a hospital and must rely on midwives. The Senate substitute now goes back to the House for final approval. Reporting from the Capitol, I'm Brian Higgins.
