Tax Break for Retirees

April 23, 1996
By: Jack Dolan
State Capital Bureau

The Missouri House of Representatives voted to give retired people a tax break. Jack Dolan has the story from Jefferson City.

Story:

The House unanimously approved an amendment that would exempt $6,000 per year of private pension benefits from state income tax. It also unanimously approved an amendment that would extend a property tax credit to disabled persons, regardless of whether they have ever been gainfully employed. But Dale Whiteside from Northern Missouri spoiled the tax cutting party when an amendment to exempt the entire pensions of retired soldiers was introduced.

Actuality:

Contents: Whiteside said, "Why not just exempt everybody? We could get lots of people to move to Missouri if we cut out all taxes on retired people. But clearly, this has to end someplace."

The military pension exemption was defeated. The private pension exemption, and the disabled persons exemption, are still alive. Both face at least two more votes in the House before moving on to the Senate. From Jefferson City, I'm Jack Dolan.
