Welfare Bill Dies

May 13, 1996
By: Beryl Chong
State Capital Bureau

The Senate passed bill to terminate welafre has been declared officially dead by the bill's sponsor. Beryl Chong reports from Jefferson City.

The bill was approved by the Senate, but when it went over to the House, it disappeared in legislative limbo.

The House speaker has had the bill formally listed as a bill before the House, so the House cannot do anything with the bill.

But that's not bothering the bill's sponsor.

The bill's Senator sponsor is Mexico Democrat Joe Maxwell. He says the bill was simply too harsh and children would have been the ultimate victims.

According to Maxwell, 98% of welfare receipients are women with children and in the past two years, 2,000 Missourians have gotten off welfare saving the State 28 million dollars.

Maxwell says that a bill that would end welfare is not reform but a slap in the face for Missourians who are working to get off welfare under the current sysem.
