Construction Unions Protest Asbestos Bill

March 24, 1997
By: Allison Girvin
State Capital Bureau

Construction union representatives argued against a bill that would take away some safety regulations from asbestos removal.

Allison Girvin has the story from the capitol.

Legislation debated in a committee hearing would no longer require some smaller projects of asbestos removal to be regulated by the department of natural resources.

Construction unions opposing the bill say they believe this would increase health risks for them.

Organized Labor Training Center representative Jerald Pelker agrees.

RunTime:
OutCue: are left unprotected.
Contents: When you exempt broad categories of asbestos abatement from their jurisdiction there is nobody out there doing the inspections and the workers are left unprotected.

Supporters of the bill say this legislation would decrease construction costs without causing any increased health risks.
