Hunters in Missouri could face up to a year in jail and a one thousand dollar fine for first offenses such as shooting game out of season.

Current legislation allows a maximum of three months in jail and a five hundred dollar fine.

Opposition came from Western Missouri Representative Bill Foster said the penalties are too harsh for first offenses.

Bill sponsor Wayne Crump said courts will decide.

Contents: "Nothing says they have to fine them $500 or $1,000. They can still fine them $10. This is not raising the minimum, it's raising the maximum."

The bill faces another vote before going to the Senate.
