Bill Would Force Hospitals to Increase Security

February 10, 1998

State Capital Bureau
Missouri lawmakers heard a bill Tuesday that would force hospitals to increase security against violence. Liz Cafer has the story in Jefferson City.

Doctors and nurses from around the state told lawmakers that some hospitals aren't protecting their workers or patients against violent people.

The bill would force hospitals to install things such as panic buttons to alert police when patients become violent.

Pat Clutter, a representative for the Missouri Emergency Nurses Association, says some hospitals are simply unaware of the problems.

"For so many years we have felt like it's just part of the job. And we ourselves have just come up in the past couple of years going, wait a minute, we don't have to put up with this. I don't have to be spit in the face and kicked."

The bill would cost the state 1.1 million dollars. In Jefferson City, I'm Liz Cafer.
