The Missouri Bureau of Communicable Disease Control reports that the number of people who have died this flu season is already over the state average. Liz Cafer has more in Jefferson City.

The flu season is nearing its end, but not before causing more than 900 deaths in Missouri.

That's 200 more deaths caused by pneumonia and influenza than the state average over the past 10 years.

Liz Kliethermes of the Bureau of Communicable Disease Control says they don't have a concrete reason for the increase.

"There is a lot of conjecture that it could be because we had this strain of influenza, the A Sydney, that was not in the vaccine."

Kliethermes also says that many of the deaths are among the elderly, who don't respond to immunizations as well as healthy adults do. In Jefferson City, I'm Liz Cafer for KMOX.
