House Passes Abortion Bill

April 8, 1998
By: Tristin Yeager
State Capital Bureau

A partial-birth abortion bill is passed by the House without the health exception Governor Carnahan supported. Tristin Yeager reports from the state capitol.

The situation is very familiar. Last year, Carnahan vetoed a partial-birth abortion bill much like the one the House passed by a large margin.

House Majority Leader Gracia Backer voted in favor of the bill, but says she still has concerns about the content.

The bill now heads to the Senate where it will face more debate about including or excluding a health exception.

The state House passes a partial-birth abortion bill similar to the one an Ohio Supreme Court declared unconstitutional. Tristin Yeager reports from the state capitol.

The bill outlaws partial-birth abortion unless the life of the mother is at stake. What's missing is the health exception Governor Carnahan and the Ohio Supreme Court say is necessary.
