Overview of the Missouri Law Under Supreme Court Review
By: Michael Patrick Carney

Missouri lawmakers approved the state's first limit on the size of political donations in July 1994.

The Campaign Finance Disclosure Law, sets the following contribution limits:

Statewide Offices $1,075

State Senate $ 525

State Representative $ 275

Limits also apply to local and judicial candidates, but the population of each election district determines the size of allowable contributions.

Penalties for Violation

Candidates must return illegal contributions. Plus, a $1,000 fine and an amount equal to the illegal contribution must be paid to the state ethics commission out of existing campaign funds. Unpaid fines are the personal liability of the candidate and committee treasurer.
