Bipartisan Support for Allocation of Tobacco Settlement Funds

A split has emerged among Missourian Republican lawmakers about the millions of dollars the tobacco industry will be paying Missouri. Princess Reyes has the story from Jefferson City:

Several Republican lawmakers have argued that tobacco money should be refunded to Missouri taxpayers.

But two St. Louis County Senators propose setting the money aside.

St. Louis County Republican Senator Betty Sims argues the money should be used to develop tobacco related programs and education for children:

Sims's position on this issue is similar to that of Democratic Governor Mel Carnahan who also argues the money should be used for child health and anti-smoking efforts.
