A bill that would keep governments from suing gun manufacturers is on its way to the state Senate floor.

There was no opposition in the Senate Judiciary Committee to Senator Peter Kinder's bill that restricts lawsuits against companies that make guns.

The bill would allow municipalities or the state to sue for defective products or negligence, but not for simply selling guns.

The bill is designed to stop lawsuits similar to the one filed by the city of St. Louis in 1999 to recover money spent on fighting gun violence.

Kinder thinks these kinds of lawsuits have no merit:

Contents: Kinder says such lawsuits are designed solely to swindle gun companies out of money.

A similar bill last year was approved by the Senate but never made it through the House.

The committee sent the bill to the full Senate for debate.
