Carnahan Quits Leadership Post for Congressional Run

St. Louis City representative Russ Carnahan is resigning a House leadership post to concentrate on higher aspirations.

Representative Russ Carnahan announced today he's quitting as House Democratic Caucus Chair to focus on a run for Congress.

Carnahan's already set up an exploratory committee to run for Missouri's 3rd district Congressional seat held by Democratic representative Dick Gephardt, who isn't seeking reelection.

Carnahan says he's quitting to devote even more time to his campaign.

Contents: I just though it would be appropriate to step down because of the time the leadership role takes here in the House and give our caucus an opportunity to put someone in there who can work full time at the job.

St. Louis City representative Robin Wright-Jones will replace Carnahan as caucus chair.

After a failed run for Congress in 1990, Carnahan says the time is right to run again.
