It was a bad day for the governor's plan to boost education funding. Aidian Holder has that story.

Gov. Holden called the general assembly back into special session to consider a package of tax bills that would raise $44 million in new funding for elementary and secondary education.

But the Republican-controlled Senate smashed his hopes without even giving his package a vote on the floor: the ways and means committee killed it on a straight party line vote.

Saint Louis Democrat Wayne Goode sponsored two of the bills. He says the issue is dead until after next year's election.

Contents: Sen. Wayne Goode, D-St. Louis County, says he doubts the legislature will take up the issue during next year's session.

The bills would have closed some corporate tax shelters, increased the sales taxes on luxury yachts and increased fees on casinos.
