Senators clear bill that prohibits gun manufacturer lawsuits

February 25, 2003

Senators paved the way for passing a bill that would prohibit state and local governments from suing gun dealers and manufacturers.

Nishi Gupta reports.

Senate President Pro Tem Peter Kinder says the bill is designed to prevent lawsuits from plugging up Missouri courts. But, opponents say state and local government should be able to get compensation from gun dealers who are negligent in sales and distribution. Kinder says some business is more pressing than unecessary lawsuits.

The bill has receieved first round approval in the Senate. If it passes the house and gets the governors approval, a pending St. Louis city lawsuit against several gun manufacturers may be dropped.
