Convicted felons must now help pay court costs

The Senate passed a bill Tuesday that would charge convicted felons $20 for court proceedings. Lindsay Shively has the story.

St. Louis Sen. Maida Coleman pushed an amendment adding the $20 surcharge to all felony court proceedings. Coleman says the convicted felon will bear the cost.

Contents: We are asking that it be so ruled that the $20 surcharge be sought against the convicted felon.

Coleman says money from the fees will be split between the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and providing matching grants for afterschool programs. The Senate adopted the amendment and passed the bill. From the State Capitol, I'm Lindsay Shively.
