Senate committee hears testimony on NWMSU merger

The Missouri Senate committee heard testimony on a bill to allow Northwest Missouri State University to merge with the University of Missouri system. Cliff Judy has more from the state Capitol.

University of Missouri-Columbia President Elson Floyd testified in front of the Senate Pensions Committee to support the Northwest Missouri State University merger.

Afterward, Floyd outlined why he thought the proposal would be good for everyone involved.

Contents: Floyd says, "We will make sure that we are meeting the needs of citizens who reside in northwest Missouri. At the same time, Northwest, if it becomes part of the University of Missouri system will have a broader statewide role and responsibility."

University of Missouri-Columbia President Elson Floyd was one of the people to speak in support of the bill in front of the Senate Pensions Committee.

While no one spoke in opposition to the bill, Floyd said he thought there was still a long way to go.

Contents: Floyd says, "Well, I'm always cautiously optimistic. We have a lot of work ahead of us. This is the first hearing. We'll have a series of other hearings both in the Senate as well as in the House, so there's still a great distance that we need to achieve in a relatively short amount of time."

Rollie Stadlman is on the Northwest Missouri State University Board of Regents and gave testimony in favor of the bill.

Stadlman said it was not at all difficult to support the bill.

Emily Dix is the Student Body President at Northwest Missouri State University.

She says Northwest students are unsure about the merger.

Contents: Dix says, "Overall, I think the feelings are pretty mixed. Students, they're not sure. Some are just hesitant because it's change and it's something new. Others that have become more educated and sought out answers to their questions are feeling more confident."
