Blunt Orders Standardized Emergency Communication Training

The State of Missouri is gearing up for major changes aimed at improving disaster preparedness.

Tim Walker has more from Jefferson City.

Governor Matt Blunt approved the National Incident Management System that requires standard disaster training for officials and emergency personnel.

The changes affect how state agencies communicate during a disaster.

"We operate one way when we're in a disaster mode and we operate another way when,more relaxed, when you're not in a disaster mode. And what the Incident Management System is saying is we're going to act the same way for both disasters and for regular non-disastor work."

Stonner says state agencies have one year to comply with the new regulations.

"Law enforcement guys can talk with the fire responder guys who can talk to emergency managers and so forth. And we all have a common language, a common terminology."

Governor Blunt signed an Executive Order requiring all emergency personnel in the state to receive the same communication training.

Director of the Department of Public Safety, Mark James, says he thinks the training will help agencies work together.

"Each of the different disciplines that come into play in response to some sort of either man made or natural disaster basically had their own language and had their own structure. And this gets all of us operating on the same sheet of music."

The State Emergency Management Agency will oversee the training.
