Budget Chairman Warns of 2007 State Budget Shortfall

The House budget chairman warned today Missouri government won't have the money to support vital state programs in 2007.

Budget Chairman Brad Lager says the state will see a budget shortfall in the next fiscal year.

Lager says the State is spending nearly double the amount of money available on schools, bond payments, fuel and Medicaid.

Contents: "There's no easy answer, there's no silver bullet. I can tell you this, it's time to put a freeze on government spending."

Lager expects state revenues to grow to 300 million dollars in the 2007 fiscal year, but mandatory expenses are expected to grow to 500 million dollars.

The 2007 fiscal year begins July 1.
