Missouri's health department said it did not want to change their abstinence education program since federal policies toward funding abstinence education changed.
Now the federal government says it wants states to broaden their target groups from teenagers to adults ranging from 18-29.
Patti Van Tuinen (Tienen)is the state adolescent health coordinator, and she is responsible for Missouri's application for the federal funding. Van Tuinen says Missouri will keep it's focus on educating teens.

Description: The focus in the past with the abstinence program has been on adolescents and parent/child education.
Van Tuinen said she won't know if Missouri will be approved of the grant given by the federal administration for children and families until the end of November.
The program allocates about $50 million dollars which it divides among the approved states.
