Champion's bill would let schools choose to participate in a state wide pilot program distributing the influenza vaccine to students.

The voluntary program would monitor the progress of the students health throughout the school year. Champion said high participation in the program might not warrant mandatory legislation.

Actuality:  CHAMP5.WAV
Run Time: 00:08
Description: There might be enough participation it doesn't even need to be mandatory, we might be able to cut down on the spreading of the virus quite a bit.

Specific guidelines for the pilot program have not been discussed.

Senator Norma Champion introduced a bill that would allow schools to participate in a state wide pilot program distributing the flu vaccination to students.

The vaccination would most likely not be in the form of an injection, but a nasal inhaler.

Champion said the nasal form of vaccination may be more effective in covering strands of the flu it wasn't designed for.

Actuality:  CHAMP2.WAV
Run Time: 00:08
Description: So often it is passed from Children back to their families, back to their parents. So it has some possibilities, it is worth discussing and looking at.

Missouri hospitals treated a record number of flu cases this season.

Further details for the pilot program have not been discussed.

Republican Senator Norma Champion sponsored legislation that would distribute the influenza vaccine to voluntary schools across the state.

Champion said she welcomes opposition to the bill and would like all concerns to be voiced in order to come to an agreement with all organizations involved.

Actuality:  CHAMP6.WAV
Run Time: 00:08
Description: I want to know what their concerns are, what their problems are, if we can meet those problems with the bill. This is a bill that is out there for discussion.

This flu season, the Missouri Health Department came up with new ways to warn people against the virus, using humorous radio and television ads to attract attention.

Champion said she would work in conjunction with the Health Department to set guidelines for the pilot programs.
