Milk Producer Tax Credits

Date: April 9, 2009
By: Rebecca Layne
State Capitol Bureau

Intro: Milk producers in Missouri would get tax credits in times of volatile milk pricing with a bill that passed from the House to the Senate. RunTime:
OutCue: SOC

Opponents of the bill say that it ignores the other segments of agriculture.

Agriculture Policy Chair Republican Tom Loehner says this is the reason why he can't support the bill.
Actuality:  LOEHNER.WAV
Run Time: 00:15
Description: For hogs, for cattle, for sheep, for dairy. That is what it's about. We need to represent. Our ag leaders need to stand together. We need to combine and speak for all segments of agriculture. It really drains on my heart that I have to vote against this bill.

Unlike Loehner, supporters of the bill say it helps the ailing dairy industry and its farmers.
Springfield Republican Representative Bob Dixon had this to say about the bill:
Actuality:  DIXON.WAV
Run Time: 00:25
Description: We have churned this issue and churned this issue today, and those in opposition, quite frankly, have milked it for all it's worth. And it just curdles my stomach to think that the entire industry could sour if we don't do something. And I know with this bill the cream has risen to the crop, and I just ask the body to put aside all "unintelligible" arguments and pass this good bill. Thank you, Mr. Speaker.

Dixon was among the 110 House members who voted in favor of the bill.
