Nixon makes jobs bill push

Wrap: Nixon says the job creation bills he's promoted all session are vital to lifting Missouri out of the recession.

But Nixon says some of those bills are going nowhere.

Actuality:  NIXON5.WAV
Run Time:  00:08
Description: "But the bills continue to stall on the floors of the Missouri House and the Missouri Senate as the hours in this legislative session continue to tick away. That is simply unacceptable."

The bills would extend tax breaks to businesses that create new jobs.

One Republican senator says the Senate will not pass more tax breaks without restricting tax credits, which Nixon has also pushed.

But tax credit reform has stalled in the House.

The senator says any movement is unlikely in the session's final days.

Wrap: Northwest Missouri Republican Senator Brad Lager says passing legislation in hopes of creating jobs won't happen this session.

Actuality:  LAGER3.WAV
Run Time:  00:06
Description: "The timeline is definitely working against us, because one of the things we're not willing to do is just do it fast. We want to make sure we do it right."

Lager says handing businesses tax breaks to create those jobs will not pass the Senate unless there is also legislation making Missouri's system for giving out those tax credits more accountable.

That plan stalled in the House when Republican Speaker Ron Richard said he did not support it.

Gov. Nixon has pushed the job creation legislation since the beginning of session.

Lawmakers have until Friday evening to pass the bills.

RunTime:  0:38
OutCue:  SOC

Wrap: Gov. Jay Nixon thought for nearly a minute about what he would say.

Then, he said University of Missouri leaders should take a look at joining the Big Ten Conference.

Actuality:  NIXON6.WAV
Run Time:  00:14
Description: "I do think that academically, joining a conference where we could have more collaboration, we should look at if it's offered. I'm not one who would close the door to looking at it."

But Nixon will not get to make the decision.

Rumors have swirled whether the Big Ten had actually offered Missouri a bid.

MU officials have denied all reports of offers to join the conference.
