Several dogs joined more than two dozen dog shelter workers from around the state in the Capitol to bring awareness to the public and legislators about animal shelters.

The shelters are also supporting Prop B. Missouri Alliance for Animal Legislation's Executive Director Bob Baker says the new bill goes too far.

Actuality:  BAKER.WAV
Run Time:  00:04
Description: "It actually weakens the current law that addresses the puppy mill problem."

Baker says it is also an issue for consumers. He says the Better Business Bureau of Missouri had many complaints last year from puppy purchasers.

Actuality:  BAKER2.WAV
Run Time:  00:05
Description: "And these dogs turned out to be sick and ill and they have to spend hundreds of dollars on veternairy bills for these dogs."

The House and Senate have both voted to undo Prop B.

Missouri animal shelters and their dogs came to the Capitol to defend Prop B and also educate people on what the shelters do.

Stray Rescue in St. Louis volunteer Connie Davie says that Stray Rescue makes sure the dogs get into a good home.

Actuality:  DAVIE.WAV
Run Time:  00:06
Description: "We have a rent-a-pet program, where you can keep a dog for a week and see if it gets along with your dog or your children or whatever."

Davie says that adopting shelter dogs will lower the number of dogs euthansized.

Davie collected over 1,000 signatures for Prop B and hopes Humane Day encourages legislators to protect the dogs. She has seen many puppy mill dogs in the shelter.

Actuality:  DAVIE3.WAV
Run Time:  00:09
Description: "Many of them were not in good physical condition, and not socilaized, and pretty well needing tender loving care."

The House and Senate have voted to repeal Prop B.
