Nixon meets with Mo. troops in Kuwait, Afghanistan on third Mideast tour

Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon says National Guard troops from his state could be on the front lines in Afghanistan as long as U.S. troops are there.

Wrap: Nixon called reporters from Afghanistan, where he was visiting Missouri troops for the third time since taking office.

When asked when he thinks Missouri's soldiers will be home from Afghanistan, Nixon said National Guard members from his state could be on the front lines as long as U.S. troops have a presence there.

Description: "As long as we have forces over here, we're going to have some portion of that guard. And if that's true, then you know that Missouri Guard is going to be right near the front."

Nixon also told reporters that he is traveling with a group of people, including military personnel. But he declined to say exactly who is in the group, citing security concerns.

Wrap: This marks Nixon's third trip to Afghanistan since he took office in 2009.

The Democratic governor said he arrived in Kuwait on Tuesday and visited airmen from Sedalia and Springfield.

He said he also an engineering company stationed in Afghanistan whose members hail from the Missouri cities of Farmington and Fredericktown.
