Wrap: Senators debated the measure that would require the State Board of Education to develop and recommend new academic performance standards in place of the federal Common Core standards.

Supporters say Common Core provides national standards for states to base their schools' curricula.

Democratic Senator, Jamilah Nasheed questioned the republican party's opposition to the measure.

Run Time:  00:13
Description: How did we get here in terms of the disconnect within the Republican Party, where you have so many republicans running away from Common Core when they were the ones that initiated it, supported it.

Republican Senator, Ed Emery said he has always had reservations about Common Core standards and dislikes many elements of the program.

Wrap: The State Board of Education would be required to develop and recommend new academic performance standards under the measure debated in the Senate.

Democratic Senator, Jamilah Nasheed, said the issue was originally on the republican agenda, and questioned why they now opposed it.

But Republican Senator Ed Emery said he has always had issues with Common Core standards, because it was implemented by the governor with little outside input.

Actuality:  EMERY3.WAV
Run Time:  00:09
Description: There was no involvement of the legislature. There was no involvement outside that elitist perspective, and to me that is unprecedented.

Supporters of Common Core standards say the program provides national standards for school curriculum.
