Intro:
Missouri's campaign season would be even longer under a bill presented to a Senate committee Monday.
RunTime:  0:41

Wrap: The measure would effectively move the general election campaign season up from three months to five months by holding an earlier primary.

Democratic senator Paul LeVota said the measure is unnecessary because Missouri voters are used to a certain pattern.

Actuality:  LEVOELEC.WAV
Run Time:  00:15
Description: Missourians are very used to having their primary in August and then using that fall time as their decision making. And if we extend that, that means more commercials, more mail, and more voter fatigue when it comes to November.

The bill's sponsor argued the change is needed so candidates could run a better general election campaign.

If you think Missouri's general election campaign is too long, a Senate bill would make it even longer.

Wrap: The bill would move up Missouri's primary election date from August to June.

Republican senator Will Kraus said the bill would give candidates more time to fundraise and campaign in the general election.

Actuality:  KRAUSELC.WAV
Run Time:  00:09
Description: I believe what it's going to do is it's going to allow after a primary for them to reset and get together and be able to put together a better campaign for the November election.

One Democratic senator said the bill would subject Missouri voters to more commercials during the general election campaign.
