A House bill to change abortion consent laws is now a vote away from being sent to Senate.
RunTime: 0:45
OutCue:  SOC

Wrap: The bill, sponsored by Republican Representative Rocky Miller, would require both parents of a minor to be informed in order to get an abortion.

Miller said he sponsored this bill because he was informed when his daughter had to decide whether or not to get an abortion as a pregnant teenager, and he feels all parents should have that opportunity.

Description: "All I want to do, I don't want to stop anything, I want to start something. I want to start a conversation among good actors, and that's what this bill is attempting to do and I think has done."
Opponents of the bill say it does not take into account families that do not have good relationships with their kids, or are abusive.

Wrap: Currently, law only requires the consent of one parent in order for a person to knowingly perform an abortion on a minor.

The bill would require the consenting parent to inform any other custodial parent or guardian prior to the abortion.

St. Louis County Democrat, Representative Sue Meredith, said the bill does not take into account minors who have bad or abusive relationships with their parents.

Actuality:  MER2.WAV
Run Time: 00:16
Description: "Some children are abused by one parent or another. Sometimes if that parent who has abused them finds out what their situation is, if they are a young woman, minor, pregnant, it could be risking their life."
The bill's sponsor, Republican Representative Rocky Miller, said he wants the bill to give parents the opportunity to help their child in these situations.
