Aging Department Approved

Missouri senior's are a step closer to getting their own government department. Kelly Just has the story from Jefferson City.

Members of the House have given preliminary approval to a joint resolution giving citizens the power to create a Department of Aging in the upcoming fall election. The measure passed despite House Republican leader, Mark Richardson arguing that a new department would only create more beauracracy. Democratic bill sponsor, Henry Rizzo accuses Richardson of trying to kill the measure.

Contents: "I think Representative Richardson turned it into a partisan issue and it really shouldn't have been. I mean, we have over 900-thousand seniors in the state of Missouri and that should have been an issue that went over party lines and I think he tried to make it real partisan and obviously it didn't work"

A third of the Republican members approved the resolution. More debate is expected on the issue Wednesday, before the bill moves on to the Senate.
