Mo. Gets Automaker Agreement

November 21, 1996
By: Tracy Sadeghian
State Capital Bureau

Missouri is one of the twenty three states that will benefit from a settlement reached with some of the nation's top auto makers, that will change the way they advertise car leases.

Tracy Sadeghian has the story from Jefferson City...

General Motors, Honda, Isuzu and Mitsubishi signed a consent agreement today with the Missouri Attorney General, 22 other states and the Federal Trade Commission.

The auto makers agreed to clean up their car leasing advertisements.

Missouri Attorney General spokesman..Scott Holste..says the settlement was sparked by ads like the ones touting zero money down...

Actuality:Jansen
RunTime:
OutCue: "...in the car."
Contents: "Many times what the cost would be would be other associated type costs, what the manufacturers would probably consider closing costs, however, any way that you cut, the consumer would not be able to go in there for zero down and pay one month's lease and go out with a car."

Lease ads featuring an amount down must now clearly disclose the total cost the consumer must pay at the beginning of a lease.

Consumers can obtain a free worksheet to help them determine the actual cost of a car lease by calling the Missouri Attorney General at 1-800-392-8222.
