JEFFERSON CITY - Gov. Mel Carnahan's curator appointees, Mary James, Connie Silverstein and Sean McGinnis, met with the Senate Gubernatorial Appointments Committee Tuesday morning to answer questions.

McGinnis, an attourney from Springfield, said he hopes to focus on lowering the cost of higher education and improving communication between the Board of Curators and the legislature.

"We need to continue to keep higher education costs as low as we can without losing the quality," McGinnis said. "We need to look at finding ways to fund higher education without putting any additional burdens on the student."

Sen. Jim Mathewson, D-Sedalia, has worked with McGinnis on the State Fair Commission and supported the appointment during the committee.

"He's done a tremendous job on the Sate Fair Commission," Mathewson said. "I know he will do an excellent job on the Board of Curators."

Silverstein, and attorney from St. Louis said her experience at the university will help her as a curator.

"As a graduate of the university, and in working with representatives from all four campuses, I know what the university does to prepare graduates for the workplace," Silverstein said.

The committee hearing did not amount to much more than the relatively brief friendly exchanges. No objections or opposition to the nominations were voiced, and the commitee approved all the candidates.

The Senate is expected to vote to accept the curator candidates Thursday morning.
