. Ashcroft still silent on "cheap hooker" comment (09/28/00)
JEFFERSON CITY - Gov. Mel Carnahan's U.S. Senate campaign said Thursday that Sen. John Ashcroft is "trying to dodge the issue" by not responding to Democratic calls that he fire his party's spokesman.

For the third straight day, Ashcroft has refused comment on an Internet charge his party's spokesman, Daryl Duwe, made comparing State Auditor Claire McCaskill to "a cheap hooker."

Also, the Associated Press reported that a spokesman for GOP Presidential Candidate George W. Bush said Duwe's remarks have no place in political discourse.

    . Access to abortion pill may be restricted at state clinics (09/28/00)
    JEFFERSON CITY - Missouri's anti-abortion laws may restrict access to the federally-approved abortion pill, RU 486, according to the key players.

    Both sides of the abortion debate agree that state funds cannot be used to fund the use of the pill, according to legislation that dates back to 1986.

    . Missouri Supreme Court hears Planned Parenthood funding case (09/28/00)
    JEFFERSON CITY - In a case one Planned Parenthood executive called "bizarre, bizarre," the Missouri Supreme Court on Thursday heard oral arguments on an issue that has pit the state government against itself.

    The state is suing the Missouri Health Department and state Planned Parenthood chapters after the department continued to fund the family-planning organization in spite of an appropriations law the legislature says forbids such action.

    . Capitol construction will cost taxpayers about $8 million (09/28/00)
    JEFFERSON CITY - The state Capitol is undergoing an $8 million facelift that will include the cleaning of marble surfaces, painting of ceilings and realignment of doors.

    Although the construction is not driven by the Americans with Disabilities Act, all renovations to the Capitol will comply.

    Other some broken marble, there have been few problems and construction should be finished by the start of the January legislative session.

    . Missouri's Gaming Commission again trys to get testimoney from gambling boat executives (09/28/00)
    JEFFERSON CITY - Executives from Station Casinos are facing a second request from the Missouri Gaming Commission for testimoney about the relationship between the firm's former lawyer and the commission's former chairman.

    The commission's first request for testimoney was in the form of subpoenas which the executives disregarded. This time, the request is not backed by subpoenas.

    Gambling licenses for two boats operated by the company expire in a few months.

    . Talent won't fire flack after he compared Auditor to "cheap hooker" (09/27/00)
    JEFFERSON CITY - Jim Talent, Republican candidate for governor, said Wednesday he would not seek the termination of the party spokesman after the flack compared State Auditor Claire McCaskill to "a cheap hooker."

    And for the second day in a row, Sen. John Ashcroft did not respond to the Democrats' call that the spokesman, Daryl Duwe, be fired.

    "I'm not going to call for his dismissal," Talent told Jefferson City's KLIK radio.

    JEFFERSON CITY - After the state's GOP spokesman compared State Auditor Claire McCaskill to a "cheap hooker," the Missouri Democratic Party's top official called on Republican leaders Tuesday to sack the flak.

    "This type of vicious personal attack has no place in political discourse," said Joe Carmichael, the Missouri Democratic Party's Chairman, in a statement. "I call on (Republican leaders) to publicly apologize on to Ms. McCaskill and to terminate (the spokesman)."

    Initial efforts to reach the Republican leaders singled out -- gubernatorial candidate Jim Talent, Sen. John Ashcroft, and party chairwoman Ann Wagner -- were unsuccessful.

    . Change versus continuity was the major theme in the first debate by the leading candidates for Missouri governor. (09/26/00)
    CAPE GIRARDEAU - Missouri's two major party candidates for governor debated first time Monday with Democrat Bob Holden urging voters to stay the course and GOP candidate Jim Talent calling for a change at the top of state government.

    Talent and Holden discussed methamphetamines, education, and more during the hour-long debate.

    JEFFERSON CITY - From Green and Reform to Libertarian and Constitutional, plus the Natural Law Party, there are nearly 30 "alternative" party candidates for statewide office in Missouri.

    Despite the odds against them, third party candidates don't concede defeat.

    . Missouri's Children's Insurance Program to Gain Unexpected Windfall (09/25/00)
    JEFFERSON CITY - Missouri stands to gain a piece of $1.9 billion in federal funds forfeited by other states.

    The national Children's Health Insurance Program allocated over $4 billion in 1997 to all fifty states with the requirement that they each spend their allocation within three years.

    Just days before the September 30 deadline, it looks like forty states will not meet this requirement and their money will therefore be reallocated to states which did meet the spending requirement, such as Missouri.

    . State to take Planned Parenthood to Missouri Supreme Court (09/25/00)
    JEFFERSON CITY - The latest battle in an ongoing war between the state and Planned Parenthood of Kansas and Mid-Missouri is set to unfold in the Missouri Supreme Court on Thursday.

    The state contends an appropriations law prohibitting state money from going to facilities that promote abortions apply to Planned Parenthood.

    The group, however, says its family planning and abortion sevices are sufficiently separate to receive state funds.
