Senator wants to make it a felony to intimidate or injure sporting officials

Threatening or hitting sports officials in Missouri will be illegal if one lawmaker gets his way.

Laetitia Thompson has the story from Jefferson City.

Kansas City Senator Harry Wiggins says he wants to make it a felony to harm or intimidate athletic coaches and officials in both local and national sporting events.

But Wiggins says the real purpose of the bill is to protect volunteers officiating youth teams from parents.

The Senator says his bill is part of a multi-state movement by the National Association of Sports Officials to protect volunteers.

A Missouri lawmaker is proposing protection of athletic coaches and officials from the abusive behaviour of parents in Missouri.

Kansas City Senator Harry Wiggins says a surprising number of parents have begun to violently attack volunteer officials in youth sporting events.

Wiggins has introduced a bill to the Senate making it a felony to intimidate, injure or touch officials in an offensive manner.

Wiggins says his bill aims mainly at protecting officials at the local level but also extends protection to national events held in Missouri.
