Senate Democrats Filibuster Over Voter Registration

ANCHOR INTRO:

Missouri's Senate is still filibustering over a voter registration bill.

Reporter Hillari Duthoo (DOO-thoh) has more from the Capitol.

The topic dominating Missouri's Senate debate was voter registration.

Several Democrats filibustered for hours, arguing that the Republican bill requiring photo IDs to vote would restrict voters.

Columbia Senator Chuck Graham suggested is was an effort by the GOP to keep elderly and infirmed away from the polls.

"The question should be what are we trying to accomplish? And what's really interesting to me is if you take a look at the people who were cut off of Medicaid last year, it's the same segment of people that we are now trying to go out and say you have to have a new form of identification to be able to vote this year. Could it possibly be that we do not want those people at the polls in 06?"

Some democrats have reached a compromise with Republicans over the bill.

Senate Democrats filibustered into the afternoon over the issue of voter registration.

St. Louis City Senator Maida Coleman said she was concerned about citizens not being able to have their vote count.

"And I can't believe that there is a person in this legislature, or in government or in elections anywhere in this country that doesn't believe that if a person casts a ballot that it should be thrown out for lack of time to count it or for any other reason."

Some Senate democrats have reached a compromise with republicans over the bill.
