Description: "They were paying for Christmas parties, retirement receptions, the types of things that would not be allowable for other state agencies." |
Montee says the House and Senate asked lobbyists for money to help pay for gifts and meals.
Adding to the findings, the House spent $19,000 out of General Revenue on lapel pins for lawmakers. That's taxpayer money.
And the House wasn't alone. The Senate spent more than $4,000 in the last three years on engraved silver trays for outgoing members.

Wrap: State Auditor Susan Montee says the Senate accepted more than $76,000 from lobbyists over six years.
Some of it went to pay for gifts and meals for lawmakers.
And some of it wasn't reported.
Montee says it's a violation of state law.
But Senate Administrator Jim Howerton isn't apologizing.
Actuality: | HOWER3.WAV |

Run Time: | 00:10 |
Description: "Nowhere in the law does it say that the person receiving the funds is in charge of making any kind of report or even following up to see that the contribution was reported." |
Howerton says the Senate sometimes needs to ask lobbyists for money to buy meals and gifts, but there's no conflict of interest.
The money goes into one account and no one knows which lobbyist paid for what.
