Senate says no to air patrol

Intro: The Missouri Senate shot down a bill aimed to provide job security to volunteers in the Civil Air Patrol.

Brian Jarvis has more in Jefferson City.

OutCue: SOC The bill was defeated by four votes. It would have assured volunteers in the Civil Air Patrol, or CAP, their jobs would still be there after returning from a mission. Southern Missouri Republican Senator Brad Lager says CAP volunteers do not deserve special treatment.

Description: "We're going to tell every private employer in the state of Missouri, if your employee wants to go volunteer, there's nothing you can do about it. You can't fire them or hire a new employee in their place."
CAP is a volunteer organization that helps out in emergencies and disaster situations.

OutCue: SOC St. Louis Democratic Senator Timothy Green says volunteers in the Civil Air Patrol, or CAP, should have job security when they go off on a special mission. Green supports a bill that assures CAP volunteers they won't lose their job if they take a leave of absence.

Description: "You have an employer that sees an employee willing to take time off without pay to go help the public in some type of volunteer way, saying that's good of you."

But Green did not convince his fellow senators, who voted against the bill 18-14.

Since 1941, the Civil Air Patrol has recruited volunteers to help out in emergencies.
