House passes fake pot ban with emergency clause

Date: March 17, 2010

State Capitol Bureau
Links: HB 1472

Intro:  Missouri's House voted Wednesday to speed up the ban on fake pot. Theo Keith has more from Jefferson City.

Wrap: The House easily passed a bill to ban K-2, a fake form of marijuana.

If the Senate passes a similar bill and the governor signs it, the ban goes into effect right away.

Its sponsor, West Plains Republican Representative Ward Franz, says sellers should be prepared for the ban.

Run Time:  00:08
Description: "With the amount of media that this bill has received, people that are concerned about this that are selling are already taking it off their shelves."

One lawmaker argued if the law goes into effect immediately, it would catch some fake pot users off guard.

Another bill banning K-2 sits in the Senate, and its sponsor says he expects that bill to pass Thursday.

The ban would take effect immediately if the governor signs off.

St. Louis County Democratic Representative Jake Zimmerman objected to that.

Description: "If something was legal yesterday and it's gonna be illegal tomorrow, you want people to have advanced notice so that people who were using it don't accidentally get caught committing a crime."

Over in the Senate, Columbia Republican Kurt Schaefer says he expects senators to pass a similar bill Thursday.

Actuality:  SCHAEF8.WAV
Run Time:  00:03
Description: "If we can get it out soon, then it'll go straight to the governor, and hopefully he'll sign it."

The Senate gave first-round approval to the ban earlier this week.
