JEFFERSON CITY - Ed Martin's campaign said Wednesday the Republican candidate is meeting with newspaper editorial boards around the state to seek their endorsement in the state's Attorney General race, contrary to a column written by the Post-Dispatch earlier this week.

But Martin campaign spokesman Gabe Jones said Martin has already met with reporters or editorial boards from the St. Joseph News-Press, The Rolla Daily News, The Lebanon Daily Record and the Columbia Daily Tribune.

In a Monday column titled "Fair or Foul," the Post-Dispatch gave Martin a "foul," writing (http://goo.gl/D9fzS) that Martin "is refusing to meet with newspaper editorial boards during this election cycle." The newspaper said that Martin had instead sent editorial boards a video asking for their endorsements, which the column said would be insufficient to earn an endorsement.

"You talk, we ask questions, you talk some more," the newspaper wrote. "Of course, you'd have to show up."

Martin's campaign also sent out several tweets yesterday indicating that he had met with newspapers.

Jones confirmed that the campaign had sent out the video (http://youtu.be/b8Eb9QsdJZE), but he said Martin still plans to meet with the boards in person. In the video, Martin says he made the recording to "begin a conversation" with the editorial boards about an endorsement.  

"I know that you as a leader and your newspaper as leader in the community are important," he says.

Jones also said Martin will still meet with newpaper editors and that the campaign will not restrict the questions the candidate answers.

"Ed goes for it all," Jones said. "He will take any questions that they want to ask and will answer to the best of his ability."

Jones said the campaign has not yet set a date for a meeting with the Post-Dispatch's editorial board. Martin is taking on Democratic incumbent Chris Koster in the attorney general's race.
