House approves photo identification measure

Wrap: The Missouri House gave first round approval to a proposal that would require voters to show a photo ID at the polls.

The proposal asks voters to amend the state constitution, after the legislature passed a 2006 Photo ID bill that was struck down by the state's Supreme Court.

Democrats like St. Louis County Representative Jill Schuup voiced concern it would disenfranchise voters.

However, the Republican controlled chamber supported the measure overwhelmingly and some GOP lawmakers say it protects the integrity of the vote.

The measure received opposition from some Democrats who say the measure may make election day more difficult for some elderly, poor and minority voters.

But Republican representative Stanley Cox sponsored the measure and says it's necessary to keep the integrity of the vote.

Some Democrats say there are not enough cases of fraud to justify the measure.

But the proposal passed on the backs of the chambers' large majority of Republicans.

Republicans like Stanley Cox, who sponsored the measure and says fraud occurs early and photo ID requirements stop it before its too late.
