Missouri death penalty drug remains under fire

If Missouri carries out a single execution using the anesthetic drug Propofol, the European Union threatens it will stop exporting it to the U.S.

Wrap: Republican Senator Kurt Schaefer says it is the Governor's duty to carry out the upcoming executions.

The next execution is set for this month, where the drug Propofol will lethally be used by any state for the first time. 

Schaefer says the governor should change the execution methods and financing in the budget, after the two impending executions.

Description: It’s not discretionary for the governor to carry out a judgment of execution, it has to be done it is the law and it’s not discretionary. We’re not the federal government, we’re not going to pick-and-choose which laws we enforce and which ones we don’t. So I have confidence in the governor’s ability to carry that out.
 
The European Union provides 85 percent of the anesthetic drug in the U.S.

Wrap: A state lawmaker has asked the Governor to act on questions about the availability of the drug Propofol.

The Department of Corrections scheduled Propofol for two upcoming executions. Republican Senator Kurt Schaefer asked Governor Nixon to include money for a new gas chamber in the budget or propose a third method of execution.

Description: If Propofol is not going to be a long-term viable mechanism to carry out those judgments, which it appears it may not be, then the governor needs to let the general assembly know and make a recommendation of what he needs with the Department of Corrections.

He voiced concerns after the European Union threatened to stop exporting the most commonly used anesthetic.
