Unaccredited school districts are already struggling to pay for students that transferred elsewhere. Now several lawmakers say amendments passed by the House Education Committee could force sending schools into bankruptcy. KMOX's Christina Santiago explains the latest from the state Capitol.

Wrap: Students that transferred during the 2013-2014 school year could graduate from receiving districts under amendments passed by the House education committee.

St. Louis County Democratic Representative Margo McNeil said schools cannot fund a year of transfer students, much less see them through graduation.

Description: "This is what bankrupted the district to begin with. This is the reason why Normandy is in trouble, it's students transferring out and this high tuition rate."

St. Louis County Democratic Representative Vicki Englund sponsored the amendment.

She said without it, current transfer students could be forced to return to their sending district if that district gains accreditation.

Wrap: Students that transferred could graduate from their receiving districts under amendments passed by the House education committee.

Description: "If Normandy or Riverview Gardens, one the school districts gets their accreditation back or something else happens, those kids are going to be required to go back, leaving the school where they're having good academic achievement."

That's St. Louis County Democratic Representative Vicki Englund.

She said this amendment would only apply to students who transferred during the 2013-2014 school year.

Committee members who opposed the amendment said this could further bankrupt sending districts if schools are forced to pay for students that stay in receiving districts.
