Kirkwood Republican Representative Rick Stream said keeping students within the district is good for the students.

Run Time:  00:13
Description: What would you want for your children and grandchildren? You would want those children to have access to a high-quality education somewhere else than the buildings they are in in those unaccredited school districts.

Opponents said the bill did not do enough to help failing schools.

Wrap: The bill would restrict the right of students to transfer out of unaccredited school districts, but it would provide a right for vouchers to private schools in some cases.

Democratic Representative Jill Schupp said the legislature had its priorities wrong.

Run Time:  00:14
Description: Quit holding our kids hostage to an ide about vouchers when we are supposed to be resolving the issue of transferring kids and making sure kids in unaccredited districts get a great public education.

The bill now heads to a conference committee where the House and Senate can work out their differences.
