House passes bill dealing with unaccredited school districts

The Missouri House came one step closer to addressing unaccredited schools in St. Louis and Kansas City Wednesday night

Wrap: A key provision of the measure would limit transfer of some students to another school within their current district if the school is accredited.

Kirkwood Republican Representative Rick Stream said keeping students within the district is good for the students.

Description: What would you want for your children and grandchildren? You would want those children to have access to a high-quality education somewhere else than the buildings they are in in those unaccredited school districts.

Opponents said the bill did not do enough to help failing schools.

Wrap: The bill would restrict the right of students to transfer out of unaccredited school districts, but it would provide a right for vouchers to private schools in some cases.   

Democratic Representative Jill Schupp said the legislature had its priorities wrong.
