JEFFERSON CITY - Gov. Mel Carnahan Thursday announced the appointment of Sarah Welch of Ladue to serve as the student representative to the University of Missouri system Board of Curators. Welch is a junior at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, majoring in English and psychology.
Welch said she is waiting until after her first meeting to develop a specific agenda. "I have my own personal opinions," she said, "but I want to see how I can best serve the needs of 50,000 students."
The governor's spokesman, Chris Sifford, said Carnahan interviewed three finalists before choosing Welch.
"We go through a pretty lengthy process," Sifford said. "The students are interviewed by the governor, who makes his decision based on who he thinks will do the best job."
Welch has served as a tutor for the University YMCA for one year and as a site leader and participant for the Alternative Spring Break program.
Appointments to the board rotate among the four Missouri campuses. The term lasts two years. An MU student will next serve in 2000.
