Gov. Holden called the general assembly back into special session to consider a package of tax bills that would raise $44 million in new funding for elementary and secondary education.
But the Republican-controlled Senate smashed his hopes without even giving his package a vote on the floor: the ways and means committee killed it on a straight party line vote.
Saint Louis Democrat Wayne Goode sponsored two of the bills. He says the issue is dead until after next year's election.
