Officials from the University of Missouri System and Northwest Missouri State University will be discussing a possible merger Friday. If talks conclude, the passing of the merger will be in the hands of state lawmakers to decide. Matt Johnson is at the State Capitol.
Republican Rep. Brad Lager says he will sponsor a bill to enact the merger once the boards propose it.
He says residents of his Northwest Missouri disrict believe the change is worth considering.
"We have a very small percentage of people who have said this is a great idea, we have a very small percentage of people who have said it is a terrible idea, but we have a whole bunch of people saying it probably has merit."
A powerful Republican in the House has expressed strong opposition to the merger.
