MOVANS unavailable to some counties

Date: October 24, 2007
By: Elizabeth Ford
State Capitol Bureau

Intro: MOVANS, a database for victims of violent crimes, now has more information for users. The Departmentof Public Safety now alerts victims when their restraining order is served to their attacker, if they decide to file one in the first place. Two counties in Missouri do not have access to this program.

Beth Ford has more from Jefferson City.

Instead of wondering when a batterer will be out of jail, victims of violent crimes in Missouri can find out when the release from custody will be.

MOVANS, the Missouri Victim Automated Notification Sysytem, has more capabilities than ever with an improved version. But the original database still isn't available in two counties, says Marc Peoples, Program Manager at the Missouri Department of Public Safety.

Description: "When we rolled out the system, everyone had an opportunity to participate.  Some chose to, some chose not to."

Hickory and Schuyler Counties did not take advantage of grant money to implement the database when it was available.
