Gubernatorial Vetos

JEFFERSON CITY - Gov. Mel Carnahan vetoed five pieces of legislation during the tail end of the 1995 Legislative Session. According to the Missouri Constitution, the General Assembly could bring up any of them for reconsideration this week. The vetoed legislation dealt with:

* charitable campaign solicitations

* school retirement

* late fees on credit transactions

* counseling for women seeking abortions

* election for county planning

Carnahan also used the line-item veto cut several budget appropriations. They, too, are eligible for reconsideration during the veto session. The appropriation vetoes include:

* $98,318 to fund legislation that would suspend driver's licenses of those who don't appear or pay fines related to state and local traffic violations.

* $15,655 for on position in the Motor Vehicle Commission that Carnahan called "no longer essential to fulfilling the mission of the agency."

* more than $200,000 for fluoroscopic X-ray equipment at the Potosi and Cameron Correctional Centers. Carnahan approved money to pay for the equipment at Potosi, but vetoed the rest on grounds that the money wasn't enough to pay for equipment at both facilities.
