Missouri is diverting half of its trash from landfills by recycling

The Department of Natural Resources says that almost half of Missouri's trash is being recycled. Christine McCarty has the story.

Missouri isn't just throwing out the trash anymore.

DNR official Dennis Hansen says that there are many ways to keep trash from going to landfills.

Contents: What we're looking at is really diversion. A percentage of the waste that has been generated has not gone to landfills, it's either recycled, composted or reused.

DNR officials say that even though Missouri is recycling more trash, it is also creating more waste then in past years. They add that diverting waste from landfills is an important step in protecting the state's natural resources.
